Skin is constantly taking a beating - we expose it to the sun, harsh beauty products, and other environmental stresses. Yet, skin often doesn't get the love and attention it deserves. Here are some reasons why skin is seriously underrated:
1. Skin protects us from external aggressors:
Skin is our body's first line of defense against environmental stress such as pollution, bacteria, viruses, and UV radiation. Our skin naturally absorbs these nasties and can regenerate itself when damaged. It's incredible what our skin does for us behind the scenes.
2. Skin helps regulate temperature: Your skin plays a key role in keeping your internal temperature in check. When we're hot, our pores expand so we can swear more freely, which cools us down. When we're cold, the hairs on our skin stand up to trap warm air close to our bodies, act as insulation, and generate heat. Pretty impressive survival mechanism, isn't it?
3. Skin is an important organ just like any other organ: People don't realize that skin is in fact an organ. Skin comprises three layers, all performing specific roles with blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles working together to create a functioning "organ". The skin we wear has its own very complex set of functions, and it should be treated with the care that all other organs are afforded.
4. Skin can impact our mental health. Our skin is a reflection of our inner wellbeing and state of mind. Time after time, research has shown that skin issues such as acne and eczema can cause stress and anxiety. Conversely, positive changes in our skin like clearing up blemishes or preventing wrinkles can boost our confidence and self-esteem.
Our skin does everything it can to protect us, it's time to start giving our skin some serious love. By taking care of our largest organ properly, we can sustain and nourish the numerous functions that help us thrive every day. So, let's give a shoutout to our hard-working skin and remember to take care of it just like we do the rest of our body.
